Fire in the Valley: The Birth and Death of the Personal Computer (3/e), by Michael Swaine and Paul Freiberger. 2014. ISBN 1937785769.
What was involved in the creation of the personal computer? It was more than just Apple ][ and IBM PCs. Fire in the Valley traces the history of the personal computer, both hardware and software, from the early days until the “post-PC” era. I really appreciated the depth to which they covered things – you really get a sense of the many companies and people struggling to create the industry, when kilobytes were the measure of space. (Your multi-gigabyte main memory of today is literally millions of times bigger.) Definitely recommended.
